Certificate ordering

Ordering FBR Certificates from the UK and Ireland

Order certificates only after confirming the citizenship route and the people in the evidential chain. FBR normally needs official civil certificates showing parental details, not decorative, commemorative or informal family copies.

Build the order plan first

Write down each person in the direct citizenship line and each event that changes a name. The order plan should explain why every certificate is needed and which two records it connects.

  • Applicant: birth plus marriage or name evidence where relevant.
  • Parent: birth plus marriage/name and ID or death evidence.
  • Irish-born grandparent: Irish birth plus marriage/name and ID or death evidence.

Verify the record before paying

  • Match the registration district and event year, not just the person's name.
  • Cross-check parents' or spouse's names where the index provides them.
  • Allow for spelling variants, anglicised Irish names and transcription errors.
  • Do not assume that the first same-name record is your relative.

What certificate support changes

Irish Citizenship Helper can research the likely records, confirm the order plan with you and order the certificates required for the agreed route. For managed FBR cases, those certificate costs are included in the bespoke all-in quote.

When a record cannot be found

Pause before substituting a different record or drafting an explanation. Recheck the geography, date range, name variants and whether the event was civilly registered in the expected jurisdiction. If a core record genuinely does not exist, use current DFA guidance or obtain appropriate professional advice for the specific case.

Common questions

Should I order short or full birth certificates?

Use the official certificate type that shows parental details, as required by the DFA document list.

Can I use a photocopy of a civil certificate?

The DFA list generally asks for original civil certificates unless it explicitly says that a certified copy is acceptable for a particular item.
